Rice, or Oryza sativa, is a well-known gluten-free grain that can be cooked in savoury or sweet dishes, and can be milled into flour. We mill organic long-grain brown rice at Organic Flour Mills (or medium-grain if long-grain not available). Brown rice is a versatile grain, so can be used as a staple gluten-free go-to. We even pack our organic rice in our GF millroom to avoid any cross-contamination with gluten.

So what's in brown rice that makes it so healthy?

Whole grain rice is a complex carbohydrate, high in fibre, B vitamins, magnesium, calcium and other essential minerals. Rice also contains protein, and although it’s not a complete protein it's good combined with our quinoa, which is a complete protein! And rice has a low GI (Glycemic Index), so is suitable for diabetics.

How best to use brown rice?

Rice is easy to digest and is great cooked together with quinoa added, in order to make it a complete protein with all the 9 essential amino acids included. Rice is also good cooked with buckwheat (another complete protein, like quinoa) for added protein, as both buckwheat and quinoa are complete proteins containing all the essential 9 amino acids, and both are also gluten-free for coeliacs. But rice is popular with every diet, whether you are gluten-free, diabetic, coeliac, or not.
